Today, we're featuring Chota Community Health Services and its Mobile Medical Unit, which helps connect individuals and families to healthcare services throughout the communities it serves.
In the Q&A below, Jordan Carmley, Chief Operating Officer, shares how mobile healthcare helps reduce obstacles to care, provides valuable screenings and education, and strengthens connections between patients and the healthcare resources available right in their own communities.
What role does the mobile unit play in helping Chota Community Health Services reach individuals who might not otherwise access healthcare services?
Chota's Mobile Medical Unit allows us to take healthcare beyond the walls of our clinics. Whether we're attending community festivals to provide first aid, school career days, health fairs, or other local events, we're able to connect with people who may not have transportation or who may be unfamiliar with the services Chota offers. It helps us build relationships within the community, educate people about available resources, and serve as a bridge that connects them to comprehensive healthcare, right here at home.
What impact have you seen from offering free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings at community events?
By offering free screenings at community events, we've had people stop by thinking it would just be a quick blood pressure or blood sugar check, only to find out their numbers were higher than they realized. That gives us the opportunity to encourage them to follow up with one of our providers before it becomes something more serious. But sometimes the biggest impact isn't the screening itself - it's the conversation that follows. It gives people a chance to ask questions, better understand what their numbers mean, and realize that healthcare is accessible and close to home.
What message would you like people to know about the value of mobile health services?
Chota's Mobile Medical Unit brings healthcare directly into the community. When we're at local events, people have a friendly, trusted place to come for first aid, screenings, or to ask medical questions. It might be a mom whose child falls and skins their knee and simply needs a band-aid, or an uncle whose nephew runs into a gate and ends up with an injury. Instead of immediately rushing to the emergency room, they can stop by our unit for an assessment, reassurance, and guidance on what the next steps should be.
To us at Chota Community Health Services, that's the value of mobile healthcare - meeting people where they are, making healthcare more accessible, and supporting our community in ways that go far beyond the walls of a clinic.
