A Healthy Start for Every Family: How Lifespan Health Supports Mothers and Children

As part of National Health Center Week and our theme, Planting the Seeds for Better Health, we're highlighting Community Health Centers that are helping their communities thrive through compassionate, comprehensive care. Today's spotlight features Lifespan Health and its commitment to maternal and child health.

The following Q&A features Rebecca Wright, Chief Executive Officer of Lifespan Health, discussing the organization's commitment to maternal and child health and the importance of ensuring every family has access to high-quality care close to home.

What does it mean for Lifespan Health to be the only provider of obstetric services for this multi-county region?

This is a privilege and also a tremendous responsibility. It means that patients can access high-quality prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care close to home. We want to ensure that every expectant mother can access the care and resources that they need in a safe and compassionate way. Our goal is to provide the support they need for a healthy pregnancy and delivery.

How does having both obstetric and pediatric services under one organization help support mothers, babies, and families?

This creates a seamless continuum of care. Our OB providers work with our pediatric providers closely to provide coordinated care and help families transition from prenatal care to pediatric care for their newborns. This integrated approach makes navigating healthcare easier. It also ensures that mothers and babies receive consistent, seamless support. We also provide integrated behavioral health care and a maternal care coordinator that helps to provide resources and additional support if those needs arise. We fully believe that having the entire continuum of care accessible to our patients strengthens outcomes for families.

What are some of the biggest maternal and child health needs you see in the communities you serve?

We see ongoing needs related to access to healthcare. We also recognize that the there are significant social factors that impact health outcomes. We see challenges with lack of transportation, health literacy, food insecurity, and substance abuse. We understand that supporting healthy pregnancies and healthy childhood development requires a collaborative effort from not just healthcare providers, but also from families, schools, and other community partners.

What message would you like expecting parents and families to know about the importance of prenatal care and well-child visits?

Prenatal and well-child visits are one of the most important investments that families can make in their health. These visits monitor your health, identify potential concerns early, and allow providers and families to work together on a plan to address issues if they arise before they become more serious. We encourage families to establish care early, keep their appointments, and never hesitate to reach out with concerns. Together, we can help ensure the healthiest start for every child and family.

At Lifespan, our mission is “to empower patients to lead healthy, quality lives one patient at a time.” We are honored to serve our communities, and help ensure that every mother, baby and family has access to the care and support that they need to thrive.
