Description
The 2020 Tennessee Maternal Mortality Annual Report details that, in 2018, the number of maternal deaths rose to 82 from 78 in 2017. More than seventy percent of all deaths were determined to be preventable and women of marginalized population groups beared the greatest brunt of this inequity. Several factors have contributed to the deaths of mothers across the state including cardiovascular and coronary conditions, substance-use disorders, and chronic conditions. Less commonly discussed is the impact of implicit bias and domestic violence as contributing factors to Tennessee’s high maternal death rate.

The Tennessee Primary Care Association will be hosting a 1.5 day training on the effect of implicit bias and domestic violence screening on mothers in Tennessee. This training will provide information and strategies for providers of community health centers and health systems to address implicit bias in themselves and their work spaces, recognize the signs and symptoms of intimate partner violence and strategies for implementing this information into practice. These training sessions will be led by Dr. Angela Marshall, MD, FACP. Dr. Marshall is the founder of the Comprehensive Women’s Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, an internal medicine practice primarily for women.

If you have questions about this training, please contact Taylor Flynn, Health Care Access Program Coordinator, at taylor.flynn@tnpca.org.
