Session One: Behavioral + Physical Health Integration in HIV Care
Wednesday, February 10, 2021 from 1 – 2:30 pm Central

Across the country, behavioral health remains siloed and separate from primary care. This division of care is even more pronounced in care for persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). The Centers for Disease control and Prevention reports that people using substances are at an increased risk of contracting or transmitting HIV. In fact, ten percent of annual HIV rates are attributed to injection drug use.

Please join on Wednesday, February 10 as Steve Raffanti, MD leads a discussion on integration of behavioral and physical health care for PLWHA. This webinar training will provide a state of the state on behavioral health in HIV care and strategies for health centers to integrate behavioral health screening and treatment into the HIV care continuum.

Presenter: Stephen Raffanti, MD, MPH
Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, Vanderbilt University School Medicine
Associate Medical Director, Vanderbilt Comprehensive Care Clinic

Dr. Raffanti has devoted his professional career to the study HIV and caring for those living with the virus. His clinical experience in the field of HIV-related medicine began in 1988, and he was recruited by Vanderbilt in 1990 to organize healthcare efforts for people with HIV in Middle Tennessee. He established the Infectious Diseases Clinic at Metropolitan General Hospital and expanded the HIV clinic at the Health Department. When it became obvious that the existing facilities would not be adequate to provide services to the rapidly growing patient population, he organized a communitywide effort that resulted in the opening of the Comprehensive Care Center (CCC) in February 1994. Under his leadership the CCC, now the Vanderbilt CCC, it has become one of the largest and most comprehensive HIV-related care centers in the nation. Dr. Raffanti also serves as PI of the Southeast AETC, and has been recognized many times for his longstanding dedication and consistent excellence in teaching with awards such as the R. Michael Rodriguez Teaching Award in 2012 and the Hugh J. Morgan Teaching Award in 2015.
